This tour is 6 miles long, please allow at least 1 hour 55 minutes to complete it, excluding the time taken to enjoy the destinations along the way.
Pause at Glencallum Bay, Bute’s southernmost point, to soak up stunning views across to the Cumbraes, before proceeding with the circuit. Make sure to visit the imposing Dunagoil vitrified fort where ancient tools, jewellery and pottery were excavated; the fort sits on your left as you proceed northwards up Plan Road. St Blane’s Monastery is one of the final unmissable places to explore as you conclude the South Bute circuit. Some archaeological remains on the site date back to the 6th century, before the monastery was abandoned in a murderous Viking raid. Finish up the circuit back in Kilchattan, where you can drop into one of the many welcoming sea-front cafes or bars for a revitalising beverage and a delicious locally-sourced meal.
Kilchattan Bay is a small village on the south of the Isle of Bute which lies at the foot of a steep hill called the Suidhe Chattan.
Home to the vitrified fort of Dunagoil, the cliff and caves around Dunagoil provide a scenic background for imaginative adventurers.
This early Christian monastery was abandoned during Viking raids around AD 790, and lies about 2 miles from modern Kingarth.
