Sawney Bean's Cave
History & Heritage
Rumoured home of the notorious 15th-century cannibal Sawney Bean and his incestuous clan
About
Sawney Bean's Cave
Now a breathtaking (if treacherous) beauty spot on the Ayrshire coast, Sawney Bean's Cave is also known as Bennane Cave. Legend has it that Alexander 'Sawney' Bean lived here with his incestuous clan of nearly 50 men and women, luring unsuspecting villagers to their gruesome deaths. The clan was eventually captured and taken to the Tolbooth prison in Edinburgh, before each of them were executed without trial.
The Cave itself is accessible only by foot and with care; the postcode provided is for a half-mile north of the Cave itself.
