About
Prestwick
The town of Prestwick is situated in South Ayrshire on the west coast of Scotland. It is adjoined to the larger town of Ayr, just to the south. Together they have a population of approximately 15,000. Prestwick is well known for being home to Glasgow Prestwick Airport. This serves many European destinations as well as transatlantic and other international cargo flights. Elvis Presley touched down in 1960 en route to Germany during his time in national service, making the airport the only place he visited in the UK.
However, despite being most well-known for its airport, Prestwick has an interesting history. The town was the first home of the Open Golf Championship. This was played on the Prestwick Old Course from 1860 to 1872. It is also one of Scotland’s oldest baronial burghs, dating back over 1000 years. Robert the Bruce is also said to have visited and drunk the water here, at what is now known as Bruce's Well.
The town itself has lots of activites for visiotrs, including Prestwick Swimming Pool and a great variety of pubs, restaurants and cafés.
