About Portencross Castle
Portencross Castle a hidden gem operated by volunteers who fund raised to consolidate and partially restore this historically important ancient scheduled monument to ensure public access. Clyde views from the roof, displays, information leaflets covering local geology, archeology, architecture, history, a Spanish Armada wreck, the finely crafted circa 700 AD silver and gold Hunterston Brooch, Coastal Path, bird watching and more. Free entry, donations welcomed. The castle was built around 1360. Robert Stewart was a frequent visitor to the castle and at least 15 Royal Charters were signed there.
