About
Discover Darvel
Darvel is a small town which is at the start of a journey of regeneration, a significant part of which is to promote the town and the surrounding area as a visitor destination. The town and the surrounding area provides a range of places to visit and activities to enjoy. Darvel is at the heart of an area recognised for the quality of walking and cycling routes stretching out from the town and for the outstanding scenery. There is a number of Irvine Valley walks and the area is dominated by the extinct volcano of Loudoun Hill and nearby is the Spirit of Scotland sculpture celebrating victories of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The area is also a photographer’s paradise.
There are two museums in the town – the telephone museum and the heritage museum which provides a very informative focus on Sir Alexander Fleming (world renown for his discovery of penicillin) and the former lace industry which had at one time 20 mills in the town. Work has now started on the development of the Corner – a civic space which will have a range of uses including the provision of regular farmers’ and craft markets. Finally, the town is internationally recognised for its annual Darvel Music festival, now in its 20th year.
