About
Columnar Sandstones
This unusual geological feature is located near Kilchattan Bay on the south end of the Isle of Bute. For geology lovers they are well worth a visit as this type of rock formation are only found in a few places around the globe. They are made of Old Red Sandstone which has been baked by heat and then cooled into a pattern of hexagonal jointing just like basalt. This results in their unusual narrow column shape. They are located on the eastern edge of the Bay.
