About Bennane Head
Bennane Head is a section of land that juts into the Firth of Clyde around 11 miles south of Girvan. From the end, there are spectacular views of Downan Hill and below there is a 200m cave carved into the rock. This cave is visited often as it as said to once be the home of Sawney Bean and his family. Sawney Bean was said to be the head of a clan in the 16th century who were known for the murder and cannibalisation of over 1000 people. However, historians tend to say he never existed.
